Hops
Hops are well known for their ability to calm the central nervous system. They will help horses that are easily distracted, enabling them to concentrate on their training. Hops also help to calm horses that are spooky and sensitive, helping horses settle into new surroundings, especially in times of home change. Hops can be given either in their natural dried form or as an infusion by mixing with half a pint of boiling water and allowing to infuse. When cold, the liquid can be used to moisten their dried feed and the spent hops can be mixed into the feed.

Lemon Balm
Lemon Balm is well known for its calming properties, it has a soothing effect on the nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. It has anti-spasmodic properties helping to reduce muscle pain and cramping. The carminative properties help to reduce the level of gas in the stomach and intestines giving relief to digestive upsets.

Passion Flower

Mullein Leaves
Mullein is helpful for a variety of equine respiratory conditions including Inflammatory airway disease (Heaves), respiratory allergies, dry and productive coughs and exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage EIPH (bleeding)  Mullein can be used alone but its effects are enhanced when combined with additional herbs such as yarrow.  Mullein is a demulcent (relieves irritation of the mucous membranes), anti-tussive (suppresses and relieves coughing) and expectorant (loosens and clears mucus).

Plantain
Plantain leaves are high in anti-inflammatory compounds making the herb effective for all types of inflammation.  The tannins in plantain have astringent properties which reduce inflammation and make it very efficient at fighting infection.  It supports lung health and helps with irritation of the lungs.  Its mucilage content reduces irritation which relieves dry cough.  It moistens and coats the air passage with a protective layer which soothes and protects internal mucous membranes and prevents further irritation.  Plantain has been used for digestive discomfort and impacted digestion.  Rich in vitamins C, K and factor “T” which helps to stop bleeding.

Thyme has anti-spasmodic, expectorant, antimicrobial, astringent and carminative actions.  Due to its expectorant action and antiseptic properties, Thyme is useful for the upper respiratory tract, ideal for coughs.  Thyme is also used for the digestive system.

Burdock Root
Burdock is an excellent aid to digestion and supports liver and kidney function. Burdock can be useful as a tissue cleanser, it supports the tissues in their action of absorbing nutrients and eliminating waste products. It can be useful as a general detox. Due to its detoxing nature, it is best used alongside other herbs such as nettle or clivers which help with the removal of these toxins. Burdock root helps to maintain healthy skin and is good for dry scurfy skin. Burdock it is a bitter and can encourage appetite. Contains copper.

Calendula (Marigold Flowers)
Calendula contains essential oil and pro-vitamin A. It has traditionally been used as a blood tonic for many stressed or fretful horses and is rich in sulphur. Calendula has excellent blood cleansing actions essential for healthy skin and hair. Combined with clivers, it is an excellent herb for the lymphatic glandular and urinary system. Calendula contains phosphorus and sulphur.

Clivers
Clivers, commonly known as Cleavers or Goosegrass, is excellent for supporting and toning the lymphatic system, it also supports the urinary system. Clivers are rich in silica helping strengthen coat and hair and improve horn and hoof quality. The positive actions of clivers are enhanced when combined with calendula. In equal quantities, these herbs are the best combination for supporting the lymphatic system.

Echinacea
Echinacea is the best known herb to support the body’s defences. It is a blood cleanser and glandular and lymphatic system cleanser. Echinacea is used to help maintain a healthy immune system. CAUTION: Do not feed to mares in foal.

Fenugreek
Fenugreek is ideal for fussy eaters and poor doers, it is useful in helping horses put on weight and gain condition, giving a new shine to the coat. It is a valuable digestive tonic helping the system make better use of available food. Its mild bitter action helps appetite and acid production. It can help bowel movement, help milk production and lower cholesterol levels in blood. Fenugreek seeds are very nutritious being 8% oil and 20% protein. It is rich in calcium which is essential for nursing mares and contains vitamins A, B, C and e.

Flowers of Sulphur
A bright yellow powder obtained from natural deposits of mineral. A natural and pure product that is safe to use and does not harm if ingested. Being anti fungal it helps the healing process.

Garlic
Garlic is rich in sulphur, excreted through the pores, garlic cleanses the blood and helps deter biting files. Supports the development of natural bacterial flora, so vital to good digestion. The nutritious essential oils can help promote a healthy respiratory system. Garlic is know for its beneficial effects on the immune system. Source of copper, Iodine, sulphur, vitamins B and C.

Green Tea Sencha
Green Tea Sencha is a powerful anti oxidant. Common anti oxidants are vitamin C and E. Anti oxidant levels in green tea are a hundred times more effective than vitamin C and 25 times more effective than vitamin E in supporting the immunity. It also helps clear the skin.

Nettle
Nettle is a rich source of iron and vitamin C, both of which actively promote an efficient circulatory system. An effective circulatory system is vital for the cleansing of the body, removal of waste products, expulsion of toxins and nutrient support of the muscles and bones. Nettle also contains sodium, chlorophyll, protein and dietary fibre. It is ideal for use as a spring tonic and general blood cleanser. It is a good conditioner and encourages dappling’ on a horse’s coat. It acts as an astringent and helps support the lymphatic system. Nettle also contains manganese, potassium, sulphur and vitamin A. A wash can be made from nettle that can be used as a rinse for manes and tails.

Red Clover
Red clover has oestrogenic actions and is very beneficial for horses that are weak or rundown and need to regain strength. It has a supportive action on the body’s immune system and eliminatory system.

Couch grass has diuretic, demulcent, aperients and antibiotic actions. It is the ideal herb for the urinary system it is used as a urinary antiseptic being particularly helpful for cystitis and kidney infections. It is used for toning and repairing the bladder and aids the whole urinary system. It is also used for constipation. Its high silicone content makes it good for improving coat and hooves. Vitamin A and B, iron and mucilage.

Marshmallow Leaf
Marshmallow leaf is used for the respiratory and urinary system. It has soothing demulcent and mucilaginous properties.  Due to its expectorant and emollient qualities, it is used for coughs. Although marshmallow leaf encourages the expulsion of mucus, it is particularly good for coughs that are dry and tight or for any irritation of the airways.  Marshmallow leaf is used to soothe and protect membrances and is helpful for inflammation of the mucous membrane of the urinary tract.  It is therefore beneficial for soothing membranes and supporting the respiratory and urinary system.

Parsley
One of the oldest and longest used herbs with a long history of use with horses. It is an excellent source of vitamins A, B and C. Parsley contains chlorophyll, iron, calcium, potassium, thiamine, niacin and riboflavin. It is a calmative, releasing cramp-producing gas and digestive tonic. Parsley encourages milk production in lactating mares and was fed by the Greek charioteers to pep their horses up. Caution: Parsley has uterine stimulatory properties and should not be given to pregnant mares.

Uvae Ursi
Uvae Ursi neutralizes acid in urine, supports urine flow and reduces bloating. Helpful for sheath cleaning for stallions and geldings who do not allow normal sheath cleaning. CAUTION: Not for longer use. Do not use more than 5 times in a year. Do not feed to pregnant or lactating mares.

Yarrow
Yarrow is an astringent and digestive stimulant. It encourages appetite and supports circulation to peripheral blood vessels. It also supports a healthy urinary system.
